Clean Diesel Projects Get $30 Million from EPA

yahoo -- The EPA announced on Thursday that it is awarding $30 million for clean diesel projects through its Diesel Emission Reduction Program. The program is designed to replace, retrofit or repower older diesel-powered engines such as those found on marine vessels, locomotives, trucks and buses. Here are the details.

* According to the EPA, $20 million of the funds for this year's grants were provided under the National Clean Diesel Funding Assistance Program. Additional funds were made available through the State Clean Diesel Grant program.

* The program, known as DERA, provides grants that will work to address more than 11 million older diesel engines that continue to emit higher levels of pollution, the EPA stated.

* DERA was first enacted in 2005 and first funded in 2008. Since then, the E

Clean Diesel Projects Get $30 Million from EPA, $30 Million for cleaner running diesel engines by using taxpayer money? New engines to reduce the 11 million older high pollution diesel engines.
Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money.

This is good news. Now, if we can just get the Republicans in Congress and their K Street masters to allow the elimination of subsidies to the Big Oil piggies...

Boy, the antigovernment forces are fired up tonight. I really wish all you people could go somewhere without a government and try it out awhile for yourselves. Anarchy is no fun.

And as for this being a waste of money, it's 10 cents out of your pocket. The Pentagon blew through this entire program's budget money in the time it took me to write this comment.

Kids without asthma are easier to teach, @abcdMA. They also miss fewer school days and their parents miss fewer days at work that would otherwise be spent at the doctor's office. Less asthma also means lower healthcare costs.

Gotta look at the big picture.

Don't worry, @libertyut. The EPA didn't get one dime from you. Your tax dollars went straight to the military and abstinence-only sex education.

They didn't add new diesel engines to the fleet, @BMWer. If anything, they replaced some diesel engines with CNG engines, so that means less diesel was used, thus reducing demand for diesel.

Less demand means lower prices.

Retrofitting or replacing the oldest and most polluting diesel engines is the most cost effective way to reduce pollution and clean our air. Locomotives, marine diesel engines, and heavy construction equipment belch the most black soot from their exhaust.

That money is well spent.

This is good news. Diesel tractors tend to run for 20-30 years before being retired. They are way behind the latest regulations and advancements in technology.

No need to worry about all this "clean" energy, if we can't afford to keep it up.

Clean diesel is a joke. All he particulate filters and EGR is a huge headache and makes the new diesels inefficient and he service light come on all the time. They need to leave them alone.
